善巧度众的比丘
有一个人出家修行,经过不懈的努力,终于修得正道,拥有很多神通。后来他运用法眼观察天上、人间和地狱,发现自己的母亲正在地狱中受着煎熬。他于心不忍,多方设法想超度母亲脱离地狱之苦,但是都没有成功。
有一次,他知道一个小国的国王再活七天就会死了,他是杀掉自己的父亲才得到王位,所以死后会堕入地狱,正好与出家人的母亲在同一个地狱中,于是这修行人想了一个方法来超度自己的母亲。
出家人施展神通进入国王的寝宫,在国王的床头壁上现出半个身子大喊大叫。国王猛然惊醒,他睁开双眼,看见自己后面的墙壁上现出半截人的身子,非常惊恐,下意识的抽出枕边的宝刀,使劲一挥,只见寒光一闪,血花飞溅,一颗人头掉落脚下。
过了一会儿,这颗头又飞上墙壁与原来的身体合在一处。国王大吃一惊,再次挥动宝刀,一颗人头又掉落下来。可是不一会儿,人头又飞回墙上。
国王害怕极了,提着沾满鲜血的宝刀不知该如何是好。
这时候,得道的比丘才从墙壁中现出全身来。国王一看,原来是个出家人,于是松了一口气,急忙扔下宝刀,叩头谢罪,口里喃喃地说:
「千万别怪罪!千万别怪罪!」
「你是不是杀害了自己的父亲才得到王位的?」得道的比丘问他。
「是的,是的,这是千真万确的。」国王在地上叩着头说。
比丘接着说:「你知道不知道,由于你罪孽深重,只剩下七天可以活命了,你死后一定会堕入地狱,我就是为了这件事来找你的。」
国王一听,吓得魂飞魄散,心想自己还正当壮年,想不到只有七天的寿命了。
国王可怜巴巴地叫了起来:「大慈大悲的比丘,求你帮帮我,让我多活点时间吧!」
比丘对国王说:「由于时间太短,你现在做善事、诵经、念佛、施舍财物,想求得好报已经来不及了。唯一的办法就是从现在开始,你只管念南无佛、南无佛。要是这七天你一直坚持下去,你犯下的杀父之罪就可以抵消了。」
国王果真听他的吩咐,马上开始念诵:「南无佛、南无佛……」一刻也没有停过。到了第七天,国王果然死去了。临到地狱之前,他的灵魂还在念诵着「南无佛」。
原来这个比丘是想借国王的灵魂来实施超度母亲的计划。
当国王的灵魂到达地狱的大门口时,随着他灵魂的念诵,这个地狱突然冷得让大家都受不了,当地狱之门打开时,地狱中所有灵魂都逃了出来,包括那位比丘的母亲。
而得道的比丘早就在门口守候了。一见到灵魂逃出来,他马上为大家讲解佛法,使他的母亲、国王以及地狱中所有的众生都得到了超度。

The Bhikṣu Who Liberated Beings with Skillful Means
There was once a man who renounced the household life and entered the path of cultivation. Through unremitting diligence, he attained the true Way and acquired many supernormal powers. With the Dharma-eye, he observed the heavens, the human realm, and the hells, and discovered that his mother was undergoing suffering in hell. Unable to bear this, he employed many methods in the hope of delivering her from the torments of hell, yet none proved successful.
On one occasion, he knew through his insight that the king of a small country had only seven days left to live. That king had slain his own father in order to seize the throne and, after death, would certainly fall into hell. By karmic coincidence, he would be reborn in the very same hell as the bhikṣu’s mother. Thereupon, the cultivator devised a skillful means to liberate his mother.
The bhikṣu manifested his supernormal power and entered the king’s sleeping chamber. From the wall beside the king’s bed, he revealed half of his body and cried out loudly. The king awoke in sudden alarm. Opening his eyes, he saw half of a human body emerging from the wall behind him, and was struck with terror. Instinctively, he seized the jeweled sword by his pillow and swung it with all his might. A flash of cold light appeared, blood spattered, and a human head fell at his feet.
After a short while, the severed head flew back up to the wall and rejoined the body. The king was utterly shocked and swung the sword again. Once more, a head fell to the ground. Yet before long, it flew back and joined the body again.
The king was terrified beyond measure, clutching the bloodstained sword, not knowing what to do.
At that moment, the accomplished bhikṣu revealed his full body from the wall. When the king saw that it was a monk, he let out a sigh of relief, hastily threw down the sword, prostrated himself, and repeatedly begged for forgiveness, saying,
“Please do not blame me! Please do not blame me!”
The bhikṣu asked him,
“Did you obtain the throne by killing your own father?”
“Yes, yes—this is absolutely true,”the king replied, knocking his head against the ground.
The bhikṣu then said,“Do you know that because of the gravity of your, you have only seven days of life remaining? After death you will surely fall into hell. It is precisely for this reason that I have come to see you.”
Hearing this, the king was so frightened that his soul seemed to leave his body. He thought to himself that he was still in the prime of life, yet had only seven days left to live.
Weeping pitifully, the king cried out,
“O greatly compassionate bhikṣu, please help me! Grant me more time to live!”
The bhikṣu said to him,
“The time is too short. Even if you now perform good deeds, recite scriptures, invoke the Buddha, or give alms, it is already too late to seek favorable retribution. There is only one method: from this moment onward, you must continuously recite ‘Namo Buddha, Namo Buddha.’ If you persist without interruption for these seven days, the grave crime of killing your father can be extinguished.”
The king truly followed his instructions and immediately began to recite,“Namo Buddha, Namo Buddha…”without ceasing for a single moment. On the seventh day, the king indeed passed away. Even as he approached hell, his spirit was still reciting “Namo Buddha.”
In truth, the bhikṣu had intended to use the king’s consciousness as the means to accomplish the deliverance of his mother.
When the king’s spirit arrived at the gates of hell, accompanied by his recitation, that hell suddenly became so cold that none could endure it. As the gates of hell opened, all the beings within fled outward, including the bhikṣu’s mother.
The accomplished bhikṣu had already been waiting at the gate. As soon as the spirits emerged, he immediately expounded the Buddha-Dharma for them, and thus his mother, the king, and all the beings of that hell were liberated and delivered.
