The Buddha’s Act of Repentance
As autumn passed and winter arrived, before one realized it, the year drew to its end. The Buddha instructed his disciples to erect a great iron pillar in the courtyard of the Jeta Grove Monastery. Although the disciples did not understand the Buddha’s intention, they nevertheless carried out his instruction.
On the eve of the New Year, the Buddha summoned Ānanda and told him first to bathe and then to put on a new robe. When Ānanda had finished washing, and returned before the Buddha wearing the new robe, the Buddha compassionately said to him,
“Ānanda, I wish to ask you to help me with a matter of great importance.”
Ānanda hurriedly asked,
“World-Honored One, what would you have me do?”
The Buddha smiled gently and, pointing to the iron pillar standing nearby, said to Ānanda,
“Go and strike that iron pillar. You must strike it with force—strike it with all your strength.”
Ānanda nodded in assent and hurried to the pillar. He picked up a hard stone from the ground, tested his aim with a few gestures, and then struck the pillar with great force.
Suddenly, the iron pillar emitted an exceedingly loud sound. The sound spread almost throughout the entire city of Śrāvastī; even the hungry ghosts in hell and the animals of the animal realm heard it. Even more astonishing, upon hearing this sound, all suffering and affliction disappeared. Whether human beings, hungry ghosts, or animals, none experienced pain or distress any longer. These consequences had not occurred to Ānanda before he struck the pillar; in fact, even Ānanda himself was deeply shaken by the sound.
The sound summoned the bhikṣus who had been resting in their quarters, and they all gathered in the lecture hall.
The Buddha addressed them, saying,
“Disciples, tomorrow a new year begins. You have all studied the Dharma for a full year. Now you should each reflect upon yourselves. I too must reflect in the same way. You are to form pairs; each of you should examine your own faults before the other, confessing the transgressions you have committed, so that your bodies and minds may become pure and free from defilements.”
All the disciples followed the Buddha’s instruction. In pairs, they carefully examined themselves, confessed their faults, and afterward returned to their seats.
At that time, the Buddha slowly rose from his seat and spoke, saying,
“Just now, all of you examined yourselves and confessed your faults. I have said before that I too must engage in reflection.”
The Buddha paused for a moment, then continued,
“In truth, I have committed no wrong deeds and have no faults whatsoever. Yet, in order to admonish and instruct you, I too must undertake reflection and examine myself.”
Having spoken thus, the Buddha performed an act of repentance before the assembly, and only then did he sit down again.
When the disciples saw that the Buddha—who had no faults at all—had nevertheless examined himself and made repentance, they felt that their own reflection had not been sufficient. Following the Buddha’s example, they again made repentance before all those present.
On that very day, ten thousand bhikṣus awakened to the meaning of the Dharma and eliminated all defiled thoughts, and another eight thousand bhikṣus realized the fruit of Arhatship.
