Dharma Talk
Subduing Heterodox Teachers Through Spiritual Powers
In India, in the city of Śrāvastī, there was a wealthy elder named Luzhi. Possessing vast riches, he was among the most prosperous in the city. Although he wished to cultivate the path with sincere devotion, he did not understand the true Dharma. Thus, he took the Nirgrantha ascetics as his teachers and served them daily with diligence and offerings.
The Buddha, moved by compassion for Luzhi, wished to guide and liberate him. Therefore, he led the bhikṣus to Śrāvastī. When the Nirgrantha teachers heard that the Buddha was coming, they became fearful and thought:
“If the Buddha enters the city, Elder Luzhi and many of the people will surely be moved by his wisdom and merit, abandon us, and cease their offerings. What shall we do? We must quickly devise a way to prevent this.”
Thus, they said to the elder:
“The Buddha is one who abandoned his parents, an unfilial son. He neglects rightful duties and wanders about. Wherever he goes, crops fail and famine arises. You must take precautions in advance.”
The elder asked:
“What measures should be taken?”
They replied:
“I know that the Buddha prefers places with forests and pure water. Therefore, if such surroundings exist outside the city, all the trees should be cut down, and the streams, ponds, and wells should be filled with filth. When he approaches the city, have people armed with sticks and blades to block his entry. At that time, I will employ various spells to drive him away. There is no better method than this.”
Elder Luzhi, who had always obeyed the Nirgrantha teachers without question, immediately ordered the townspeople to act accordingly.
Before long, the Buddha and the bhikṣus arrived outside the city. They saw that the once lush trees had all been cut down, and the clear waters of rivers and ponds had been filled with foul refuse. The scene was desolate and sorrowful. The Buddha’s heart was filled with compassion and grief.
Then the Buddha, employing his spiritual powers, caused all the trees to be instantly restored, flourishing as before. The rivers, ponds, and wells were filled once more with pure, clear water. He further transformed the city walls into crystal, so that the people within could see clearly what was taking place.
At that moment, Elder Luzhi and many of the townspeople came forth to the Buddha. The Buddha expounded the Dharma, saying:
“Elder, you possess merit and wholesome roots; therefore, I have come especially to guide you. False teachings and the true Dharma cannot be compared. To follow wrong teachings not only fails to elevate one, but leads instead to downfall. To waste this precious human life and limited energy upon improper paths—is this not most regrettable? If you were to practice according to my teachings with the same sincerity you once gave to false doctrines, you would surely attain great peace and great wisdom.”
Seeing the Buddha’s display of spiritual powers, Elder Luzhi and the people were already filled with faith and reverence. How much more so after hearing his teaching! They deeply repented, like children who, having been mistreated outside, finally return to their mother.
With a heart overflowing with gratitude, Elder Luzhi at last spoke:
“O Buddha! Your compassion and greatness are beyond measure!”
