修道者应如是自警自惕
昔时,佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园弘化。一日,摩诃迦旃延尊者与众多比丘们聚集在婆罗那乌泥池畔的食堂中,一起缝制僧衣。
当时,有一位执着手杖的年老梵志来到食堂,拄着手杖站在一旁,沉默了一会,然后开口对比丘们说:“诸位长老,你们见到长辈来,为何都不问候,并恭敬地请他入座呢?”
当时,迦旃延尊者也在座中,听到梵志的提问,便对梵志说:“佛法中,若有德高望重的长者来,我们都会向他问候、恭敬礼拜,并请他入座。”
梵志说道:“我看这里没人比我更年长的,但是并没有人来问候我、对我恭敬礼拜,并请我就座,你为什么说‘佛法中,见到德高望重的长者,会恭敬礼拜,并请他就座’呢?”
迦旃延尊者回答:“若有八、九十岁的老人家,发白齿落,但他在修行上的成就像少年般浅薄,就不能算是长者;相反地,如果一位年纪才二十五岁的年轻人,肤白发黑,年轻力壮,青春貌美,在修行上的成就如长者般深厚,就属于长者之辈。”
梵志听了,不解地追问道:“为什么说八、九十岁的老人,发白齿落,却只成就年少之法;而二十五岁的年轻人,肤白发黑,健壮貌美,却可被视为长者之辈?”
迦旃延尊者回复:“有五种欲,就是指眼根与色尘相触,产生贪爱、好乐、念念不忘的执着;耳根接触声尘,鼻根接触香尘,舌根接触味尘,身根接触触尘,对这些感受产生贪爱、好乐、念念不忘。
若是无法断除对五欲的贪恋、欲求、爱执、念想、染浊,虽然已经八、九十岁高龄,发白齿落,在修行上,也只是成就年少之法。一个二十五岁的年轻人,肤白发黑,健壮美好,对于五欲能做到不贪恋、无欲求、不爱执、无念想、离染浊,虽然才二十五岁,但在修行上已成就老人法,就属于长者。”
听完迦旃延尊者的说明,年老梵志说道:“依尊者所开示的法义,我反省检视自己,虽然年老,但修行上的成就还很浅薄。您们虽然年轻,但有长者的修行。我还有许多事要处理,现在便请辞先回去了。”
尊者回应:“梵志,您可以依您的方便自行离去。”
听闻了迦旃延尊者的开示,年老梵志满心欢喜地离去。

A Practitioner Should Thus Be Vigilant and Self-Aware
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in Śrāvastī at Jetavana, the Grove of Anāthapiṇḍada, teaching and transforming beings. On one occasion, Venerable Mahākātyāyana, together with many bhikṣus, gathered in the refectory by the bank of the Vārāṇā River, sewing their robes.
At that time, an elderly brāhmaṇa, leaning upon a staff, came to the refectory. Standing to one side, he remained silent for a while, then said to the bhikṣus:
“Venerable elders, when you see one who is senior, why do you not greet him, show respect, and invite him to be seated?”
Venerable Kātyāyana was among those present. Hearing this, he said to the brāhmaṇa:
“In the Buddha-Dharma, when a venerable elder of great virtue and attainment arrives, we indeed greet him, pay him respect, and invite him to sit.”
The brāhmaṇa said:
“I see no one here older than myself, yet no one has greeted me, shown me respect, or invited me to sit. Why then do you say that in the Buddha-Dharma, elders are treated with reverence and offered a seat?”
Venerable Kātyāyana replied:
“If a man of eighty or ninety years, with white hair and missing teeth, has only shallow attainment in cultivation like that of a youth, he cannot be called an elder. Conversely, if a young man of twenty-five years, with dark hair and strong body, possesses deep attainment in cultivation like that of a venerable elder, he is indeed to be regarded as an elder.”
The brāhmaṇa, not understanding, asked further:
“Why is it said that one of eighty or ninety years, with white hair and missing teeth, has only the attainment of youth, while a young man of twenty-five years may be regarded as an elder?”
Venerable Kātyāyana replied:
“There are five desires: when the eye encounters forms, the ear encounters sounds, the nose encounters scents, the tongue encounters tastes, and the body encounters tactile objects, attachment, delight, and clinging arise, with thoughts that linger and do not depart.
If one is unable to abandon craving, desire, attachment, and defilement toward these five objects, then even at eighty or ninety years of age, with white hair and failing teeth, one has attained only the state of youth in the Dharma. But if a young person of twenty-five years is able to remain free from craving, without desire, without attachment, without clinging, and free from defilement toward the five desires, then though young in years, in the Dharma he has attained the state of an elder and is rightly called such.”
After hearing this explanation, the elderly brāhmaṇa said:
“According to the teaching you have expounded, I reflect upon myself and see that though I am old in years, my attainment in cultivation is shallow. You, though young, possess the attainment of elders. I still have matters to attend to, and shall now take my leave.”
The Venerable replied:
“Brāhmaṇa, you may depart according to your convenience.”
Having heard Venerable Kātyāyana’s teaching, the elderly brāhmaṇa departed filled with joy.
