Teaching According to the Capacity of Beings

In ancient India, there was a village called Ganquan, whose people were simple and sincere. Within the village there was a great spring, pure and sweet. Its water was cool and refreshing, capable of quenching thirst. Those who were ill often drank from it and naturally recovered. People from distant places came in an endless stream to partake of its water.

When news of this reached the king, he said with admiration:

“This precious spring is a gift of nature, like sweet dew that refreshes the spirit. I wish that the villagers would bring this water daily to the royal palace.”

The villagers did not dare neglect the king’s command. Under the leadership of the village headman, they took turns each day carrying water to the capital as an offering.

The village lay five li away from the city. There were no carts for transport; the villagers had to carry the water by hand over rough and uneven roads. Whether under the blazing sun or in the rain, in the warmth of spring or the cold of winter, they continued to bear the burden. Over time, however, the villagers grew weary of the long journey and hard labor. Complaints arose, and they gathered together to discuss moving away to avoid the burden of carrying water.

When the headman learned of their intention, he quickly assembled the villagers and said:

“For now, do not move away. Allow me to go and request of the king that the distance be changed from five li to three li. If the distance is shortened, will not your fatigue be reduced?”

Hearing this, the villagers found his reasoning sound and agreed.

The next day, the headman went to see the king and said:

“O King, the villagers must carry water five li each day and find the journey too long. Might it be possible to change it to three li in name?”

  The king replied:

“So long as the water is delivered daily, a change of name that shortens the distance is acceptable. Henceforth, let it be called three li.”

When the villagers heard that five li had been changed to three li, they rejoiced. From that day on, they no longer complained while carrying water, and their sense of fatigue seemed to vanish.

When the Buddha learned of this matter, he said to his disciples:

“Beings are like those foolish villagers. When they are taught the true Dharma—the Great Vehicle that leads beyond birth and death, frees them from afflictions, and enables the liberation of all beings—they become fearful and shrink back. Therefore, I first teach them the wholesome practices that lead to the happiness of human and heavenly realms, the teachings of the lesser vehicle. Finding these easier to practice, they gladly cultivate the path. In this way, they gradually attain liberation from birth and death. Such is the skillful means of my teaching—adapting the Dharma according to the capacities of beings.”

Upon hearing these words, the disciples all praised the Buddha, marveling at the greatness of his wisdom and compassion.
