Offering a Handful of Stones, Reaping Lifetimes of Wealth

In former times, when the Buddha was dwelling at Jetavana in Śrāvastī, expounding the Dharma, there lived in the city a wealthy merchant. His wife gave birth to a son, and at the moment of the child’s birth, wondrous signs appeared in the sky. Countless treasures—gold, silver, jewels, agate, and amber—fell from above, filling the entire courtyard. The family was astonished: why did these rare treasures fall only within their courtyard and not beyond it? Though perplexed, they were filled with joy and amazement.

Finding the event extraordinary, they invited a renowned physiognomist to examine the child. Upon seeing the infant, the diviner was greatly delighted and said to the merchant:

“Your son’s features and markings are most unusual. In all my years, I have never seen such a one. This child is certainly no ordinary being. When he grows, he will attain great wealth and bring benefit to many.”

After sending off the diviner, the merchant and his wife deliberated and named the child Baotian, “Heavenly Treasure.” They cherished him deeply, raising him with the utmost care and providing him with the finest life.

Time passed swiftly, and in the blink of an eye, more than ten years had gone by. Baotian had grown into a young man. Born into wealth, he received the best education, and he was intelligent, talented, and refined in appearance. Many maidens admired him and sought his hand in marriage. Yet strangely, no matter how beautiful or accomplished the suitors, Baotian refused them all. His parents grew both concerned and somewhat displeased, for he had reached the age of marriage.

One day, while walking along the street, Baotian overheard two people discussing the Buddha and the Dharma. He was intrigued and followed them for quite some distance, listening quietly to their conversation. Although he had heard of the Buddha and the Dharma in his childhood, this discussion gave him a deeper understanding and insight.

Upon returning home, Baotian shut himself in his room, reflecting silently on what he had heard. His mother called him several times to come and eat, but he did not respond. He remained thus for an entire day and night, absorbed in contemplation. At last, he resolved to leave the household life and follow the Buddha in cultivation.

Unable to wait until dawn, he awakened his parents and told them of his decision. To his surprise, they did not oppose him. With loving hearts, they said:

“My child, if you have truly thought this through, then go and follow your aspiration. Your parents will always support you.”

After speaking with them, the sky had just begun to lighten. Baotian took a simple meal, put on new clothing, and departed toward Jetavana. His parents watched his figure recede into the distance, their hearts filled with both reluctance and concern, until he disappeared from sight.

Baotian came before the Buddha, prostrated fully, and said respectfully:

“World-Honored One, I have come today to follow you and leave the household life to cultivate the path. I pray that you will grant me this.”

The Buddha, already aware of Baotian’s causes and conditions, said:

  “Good, good.”

As soon as these words were spoken, Baotian’s hair and beard fell away, and his garments transformed into the robes of a bhikṣu. He assumed the appearance of one who had gone forth. The Buddha then seated him nearby and began to expound the essential meaning of the Dharma, resolving all his doubts.

Being naturally intelligent and now guided by the Buddha’s careful instruction, Baotian quickly understood the true nature of the world. He completely relinquished all afflictions and suffering, and in a short time attained the fruit of Arhatship.

The bhikṣus, seeing how swiftly Baotian had realized Arhatship, were greatly astonished and requested the Buddha to explain the cause. The Buddha then told them:

“In a past life, during the time of Buddha Vipaśyin, he traveled widely, teaching the Dharma. One day, many lay devotees prepared abundant offerings of food and necessities for the Buddha and the Saṅgha. At that time, there was a very poor man. Though he had deep faith in the Buddha-Dharma, he possessed nothing with which to make an offering. Having no other means, he gathered a handful of white stones and, taking them as precious treasures, offered them with sincerity to the Buddha and the Saṅgha.

“That poor man of the past is none other than Baotian in his present life. Because of that offering, he has, in life after life, enjoyed immeasurable wealth. In this life as well, he has attained the path.”

Thus it is that offerings made with sincere faith, even if of little worldly value, bring forth vast and immeasurable merit.
