Where Do Beings Go After Death
In the world of ordinary life, apart from attending to food, clothing, shelter, and daily affairs, the question most often discussed is this: “From where does life arise, and where does it go after death?”
Thus has it been throughout all times and places.
On one occasion, in the morning, many bhikṣus went to a village called Nārika to seek alms. Some villagers told them that many devout lay followers of the Dharma in that village had recently passed away one after another. Hearing this, the bhikṣus went from house to house, offering condolences to the families of the deceased. They chanted sūtras together, expressing their sincere respect.
After returning from their alms round, the bhikṣus, deeply moved by the virtuous deeds of these lay followers during their lives, wished to know where they had been reborn after death. Thus, they came before the Buddha and humbly asked:
“World-Honored One, recently many devout upāsakas in the village of Nārika have departed from this life. Thinking of this fills us with sorrow.”
The Buddha remained silent for a moment, then said to the disciples:
“Bhikṣus, you need not grieve. All beings follow their own karmic causes and conditions. When these causes and conditions come together, they depart in accordance with the Dharma.”
The bhikṣus then asked further:
“World-Honored One, we wish to know—have these lay followers fallen into unfortunate realms after death?”
The Buddha again remained silent for a time. Seeing their earnest expressions, he slowly replied:
“The lay followers of Nārika, during their lives, cultivated diligently. The majority have severed the five lower fetters and attained the fruit of Non-Returners. They will no longer revolve within the six realms of suffering.”
Hearing this, the bhikṣus continued to inquire about the destinies of lay followers in other villages. The Buddha said:
“Among them, some have attained the fruit of Non-Returners, some the fruit of Once-Returners, and a few the fruit of Stream-Enterers. In any case, no wholesome effort is ever lost. These lay followers, who upheld precepts and practiced virtue, have all obtained good destinies. Bhikṣus, you may set your minds at ease.”
The bhikṣus, still not fully satisfied, intended to ask further about others. But the Buddha stopped them, saying:
“Enough, enough! If people in the world were all like you, coming to ask me one by one about the destinies after death, even if I had three heads and six arms, I would not be able to manage it.”
Hearing this, the bhikṣus felt ashamed and repented before the Buddha.
The Buddha then said:
“Where there is birth, there is death—this is the constant law of the world. As for where each person goes after death, it may already be discerned, to some extent, from their conduct during life. Therefore, people should not invert the root and the branch. If one diligently ceases evil and practices good during life, why should one be concerned about where one will go after death?”
