The Wise Are Not Moved by Gain or Loss
In a certain year, the Buddha, together with many bhikṣus, accepted the invitation of a brāhmaṇa and went to Verañjā to observe the rains retreat. However, upon their arrival, that brāhmaṇa, influenced by Māra Pāpīyān, failed to support the Buddha and the Saṅgha. At that time, a famine also afflicted the region, and the people of Verañjā could offer only a very small amount of food when the Buddha and his disciples went out on alms rounds.
Despite such hardship, none of the bhikṣus became disheartened. They remained content with the small amount of grain that a horse trader offered to them each day.
When the rains retreat came to an end, the Buddha and the Saṅgha, having informed the brāhmaṇa, returned to Jetavana in the park of Anāthapiṇḍada. The people of Śrāvastī welcomed the Buddha and the bhikṣus with great joy and made abundant offerings.
At that time, there was a group of people who, out of reliance upon the compassion of the bhikṣus, stayed within the monastery. Whenever they had greedily consumed all the leftover food of the monks, they would simply sleep. When they awoke, they would go to the riverside, shouting, leaping, and engaging in idle play. Wherever they went, their conduct was improper, and they lived in idleness without purpose.
One day, the bhikṣus discussed among themselves:
“When we were in Verañjā, due to the famine, these people were respectful and well-behaved. Now that food is plentiful, their conduct has become unruly.”
At that time, the Buddha heard their discussion and said:
“Foolish people, when faced with adversity, are filled with sorrow and dejection; yet when circumstances become favorable, they leap with delight. Such is the nature of the deluded. The wise, however, do not allow their minds to be shaken by gain or loss in life.”
