四婆罗门得道
很久以前,有四个婆罗门教士因为专心修道,所以得到一些神通力,能在天空自由飞行。他们四个人常常在一起讨论神通的妙处,一说起这个话题,每个人都很开心。
有一天,这四个婆罗门又聚在一起,他们一边在空中飞行,一边交谈着,其中一个人说:
「如果有谁听过佛法,就可以进入解脱的法门了。」
另一个婆罗门听了这话,连忙问:「像我们这样的人如果听到佛法,会怎么样呢?」
又一个婆罗门回答说:「我们听到佛法,当然也会进入解脱之门。」
「解脱世间的痛苦还可以,如果连欢乐也解脱了,那还有什么意思?」
「就是呀!只是求道,却得不到快乐,一点意义也没有。」
「我看,我们就不要去听佛法了。」
「说得也是,我非常同意。」
「像这样飞来飞去不是很惬意吗?但愿永远如此,也就别无所求了。」
于是,这四个婆罗门教士便一起约定不听闻佛法。虽然他们不愿听闻佛法,但是心中对佛陀还是很尊敬的。
有一次,他们每人拿着一瓶甜美的石蜜,准备供养佛陀。
当他们来到佛陀的精舍外面,却又害怕万一四人一同进去,佛陀一定会为他们说法。
于是,他们商量好,每人轮流进去,供养完毕就立刻出来,这样便可避开佛陀的开示。
当第一个婆罗门教士举着石蜜献到佛陀面前时,佛陀对他说:
「所行非常……」
他一听到佛陀说法,急忙用手掩住双耳。这时,第二个婆罗门教士进来献石蜜,听到佛说:
「……谓法兴衰……」
他一听就知道佛陀在说法,也急忙掩住双耳不听。随后,第三个婆罗门教士进来献石蜜,听到佛说:
「……夫生辄死……」
他也知道是佛陀在说法,便学前面两个人捂住自己的耳朵。
最后一个婆罗门教士缓缓献上石蜜,只听到佛说:
「……此灭为乐。」
他马上想到这是佛陀在说法,便立即掩住耳朵。
四个人都捂住耳朵跑了出来,互相问别人听到什么。结果四个人把自己听到的说出来,刚好凑成一句佛偈:
「所行非常,谓法兴衰;
失生辄死,此灭为乐。」
这四个婆罗门教士一听就了解这句偈语的意义,当下心开意解,了解了佛陀的意思,因此都证得初果。
这四位证得初果的婆罗门,无不为他们以前的想法感到忏悔。他们立即转身回到佛陀的精舍,来到佛陀面前顶礼忏悔,并且说道:
「我们已经发愿要追求佛道,所以又前来听佛陀说法,希望可以剃度出家,跟随着您修行。」
佛陀回答说:「善哉!比丘,你们就开始修行解脱道吧!」
仰仗佛陀的威德力,这四个婆罗门听到佛陀的话时,当下头发纷纷掉落,身上的衣服也在一瞬间变成袈裟。此时,他们彻底舍弃了尘缘俗念,在佛陀面前即刻变成四个阿罗汉圣者了。

The Four Brāhmaṇas Attain the Path
Long ago, there were four Brāhmaṇa ascetics who, through devoted cultivation, obtained certain spiritual powers and were able to fly freely through the sky. The four often gathered together to discuss the marvels of their supernatural abilities, and whenever this topic arose, each of them felt great delight.
One day, the four Brāhmaṇas assembled again. While flying through the air and conversing, one of them said,
“Whoever hears the Buddha-Dharma can enter the gate of liberation.”
Another Brāhmaṇa, upon hearing this, asked,
“If people like us were to hear the Buddha-Dharma, what would happen?”
A third Brāhmaṇa replied,
“If we hear the Buddha-Dharma, we too would surely enter the gate of liberation.”
Another then said,
“Liberation from worldly suffering may be acceptable, but if even joy must be relinquished, what meaning would there be?”
Another added,
“Indeed. To seek the Path yet obtain no happiness would have no meaning at all.”
Another concluded,
“In my view, we should simply not listen to the Buddha-Dharma.”
Another said,
“That is well said; I fully agree.”
Yet another remarked,
“Is it not pleasant to fly about like this? If we could remain so forever, there would be nothing more to seek.”
Thus, the four Brāhmaṇa ascetics together agreed not to listen to the Buddha-Dharma. Although they were unwilling to hear the Dharma, in their hearts they still held great reverence for the Buddha.
On one occasion, each of them took a jar of sweet rock honey, intending to make an offering to the Buddha. When they arrived outside the Buddha’s monastery, they became concerned that if all four were to enter together, the Buddha would certainly expound the Dharma for them. They therefore discussed among themselves and agreed that each would enter in turn, make the offering, and immediately depart, thereby avoiding the Buddha’s teaching.
When the first Brāhmaṇa ascetic raised the jar of rock honey and presented it before the Buddha, the Buddha said,
“All conditioned actions are impermanent …”
As soon as he heard the Buddha speaking the Dharma, he hastily covered his ears with his hands.
At that moment, the second Brāhmaṇa ascetic entered to present his offering and heard the Buddha say,
“… this is called the arising and passing of the Dharma …”
Knowing at once that the Buddha was expounding the Dharma, he too hurriedly covered his ears.
Then the third Brāhmaṇa ascetic entered to present his offering and heard the Buddha say,
“… whatever is born must surely perish …”
Realizing likewise that the Buddha was teaching the Dharma, he followed the others and covered his ears.
Finally, the last Brāhmaṇa ascetic slowly presented his offering and heard the Buddha say,
“… this cessation is bliss.”
He immediately recognized that the Buddha was teaching the Dharma and promptly covered his ears as well.
All four covered their ears and hurried outside, asking one another what each had heard. When each recounted the words he had heard, they happened to combine perfectly into a single gāthā of the Buddha:
“All conditioned actions are impermanent; this is called the arising and passing of the Dharma.
Whatever is born must surely perish; this cessation is bliss.”
Upon hearing this gāthā, the four Brāhmaṇa ascetics immediately understood its meaning. Their minds opened and their understanding became clear; they comprehended the Buddha’s intent and, at that very moment, all attained the First Fruit.
These four Brāhmaṇas who had attained the First Fruit all felt remorse for their former views. They immediately turned back to the Buddha’s monastery, came before the Buddha, bowed in repentance, and said,
“We have now resolved to seek the Buddha Path. Therefore we have returned to hear the Buddha teach the Dharma. We wish to shave our heads, leave home, and follow you in cultivation.”
The Buddha replied,
“Excellent indeed. Bhikṣus, you may now begin to cultivate the path of liberation.”
Relying upon the Buddha’s majestic spiritual power, as soon as the four Brāhmaṇas heard the Buddha’s words, their hair fell away of itself, and their garments instantly transformed into monastic robes. At that moment, they completely relinquished worldly attachments and defilements, and before the Buddha they immediately became four Arhats.
