The Merit of a Single Act of Giving
In the city of Śrāvastī there lived an elderly man named Juliu. He was extremely wealthy, yet he felt no happiness at all, for he had never had a child. Day and night he prayed with sincere devotion, hoping to obtain a son, and in the end his earnest prayers moved the heavenly beings.
A deity appeared before Juliu and said,
“Juliu, in a few days a heavenly king whose lifespan has come to an end will descend and be reborn in your household. You may wait in peace.”
From that very day onward, Juliu’s wife became pregnant, and in due time she gave birth to a son. Juliu named the child Subhūti.
Time passed swiftly, and before long Subhūti had grown to adulthood. He was not only dignified in appearance, but also keen in intellect and kind in heart. Seeing that countless people throughout the world lived in poverty and hardship, he felt ashamed of the excessive wealth enjoyed by his own household.
Subhūti then formed a vow in his heart to request that the Buddha point out for sentient beings the path to liberation. He therefore spoke to his parents, saying,
“Father, Mother, your son has lived at home for many years and has received the grace of your nurture, which I shall never forget. Yet I wish to help sentient beings seek the path of liberation. I hope you will allow me to follow the Buddha and leave home.”
When Juliu and his wife heard these words, they were deeply moved. Although they were reluctant in their hearts, they knew that Subhūti was a heavenly king reborn and not an ordinary person, and thus they gave their consent.
Subhūti thereupon left home and became a śramaṇa, following the Buddha in diligent cultivation. Before long he attained the First Fruit, and later, among the Buddha’s disciples, he was the foremost to realize the fruition of an Arhat.
Ānanda, a disciple of the Buddha, was greatly astonished at the speed with which Subhūti attained the Path, and with reverence he asked the Buddha,
“World-Honored One, what merit did Subhūti cultivate in former lives that allows him in this life to so swiftly accomplish the Arhat Path?”
The Buddha replied,
“Ānanda, you have asked well. Subhūti attained the Path quickly because of causes and conditions from his past lives. In a former life, he was a child born into a poor household. At that time, a bhikṣu came into the city to beg for alms. For many days he obtained nothing, and throughout the city no one was willing to give. Just then he encountered Subhūti’s former self. Though the child was young and his family poor, he possessed a heart of compassion. He led the bhikṣu back to his home and offered him his own portion of food, while he himself remained hungry. After the bhikṣu finished eating, he departed by means of spiritual power, rising into the air, and the child, seeing this, was filled with great joy.
“Later, that child was reborn in the heavenly realm as a heavenly king. After ninety-one kalpas, when his lifespan ended, he descended into the world and was born into the household of Juliu. Disliking wealth and delighting only in the Buddha-Dharma, he left home, and thus swiftly attained the Path. This is the result of Subhūti’s accumulated causes and conditions over many lifetimes.”
At that moment, Ānanda sighed and said,
“If a single act of giving can bring forth such great merit, how much greater must the merit be of repeated acts of giving!”
