五百菩萨的大愿

  过去旷野菩萨化身为鬼,散脂菩萨化身为鹿,慧炬菩萨化身为猕猴,离爱菩萨化身为羚羊,尽漏菩萨化身为鹅王,一共有五百名菩萨都各自化身为种种飞禽走兽的模样,而且他们的身体都发出智慧的光彩。每一菩萨都举起一盏明灯,让灯光高高照着,照亮整个天地,因为五百菩萨都要去供养各地的佛。

  疑心菩萨见到五百位菩萨变成各种模样,便问旷野菩萨说:

  「你们为什么要变成这种样子去供养十方佛呢?」

  旷野菩萨说:「因为在过去九十九劫时,有一位佛叫毗婆尸。当时我与这五百位菩萨都是同一父母生下的亲兄弟,我们受持五戒,行善助人,一同供养尸弃佛、毗舍浮佛、鸠留孙辟等诸佛。那时散脂菩萨在尸弃佛等佛面前立下誓言说:

  『希望我来世化作鬼神的模样,教化因贫穷而行恶事的芸芸众生。就算有什么凶神恶煞,我也要为他讲三乘之法,帮助他得到解脱,然后成就菩提道。』

  还有一万二千多名鬼王对这个世界发下重大的誓愿:

  『我们要调伏一切众生,使他们敬法求道,投生善趣,并超脱轮回苦海。如果有恶鬼毁坏正法,我们一定前去降伏。因此,我们变成这样的鬼身,来调伏刚强众生,令他们皈依正法,修学佛道,发愿成佛。』」

  旷野菩萨看着疑心菩萨继续说:「我现在变成鬼怪,是为了人间一切众生。我有金刚咒语,可以使一切恶鬼不能加害众生。如婆罗门、刹帝利、吠舍、首陀罗四等种姓的人,远离行恶之心,也可以使所有鸟虫禽兽生出善心,不做恶事,远离一切恶行和恐怖、惧怕。我发下大誓愿要引导众生,念这段金刚法咒令,使一切众生不做邪恶的行径,所以现在化身为鬼怪,以实行我立下的誓愿。」

The Great Vow of the Five Hundred Bodhisattvas

  In ages past, the Bodhisattva Kuangye manifested as a spirit, the Bodhisattva Sanzhi manifested as a deer, the Bodhisattva Huiju manifested as a monkey, the Bodhisattva Li’ai manifested as an antelope, and the Bodhisattva Jinlou manifested as a king of geese. In all, there were five hundred Bodhisattvas, each manifesting in the forms of various birds and beasts, and from their bodies shone the radiant light of wisdom. Each Bodhisattva raised a bright lamp, holding it high so that its light illuminated the heavens and the earth, for the five hundred Bodhisattvas were on their way to make offerings to the Buddhas of all directions.

  When the Bodhisattva Yixin(lit. “Doubtful Mind”) saw the five hundred Bodhisattvas transforming into various forms, he asked Bodhisattva Kuangye,

  “Why do you transform yourselves into such forms in order to make offerings to the Buddhas of the ten directions?”

  Bodhisattva Kuangye replied,

  “Because in the distant past, ninety-nine kalpas ago, there was a Buddha named Vipasyin. At that time, I and these five hundred Bodhisattvas were all brothers born of the same parents. We upheld the Five Precepts, practiced goodness, aided others, and together made offerings to Buddhas such as Śikhin, Viśvabhū, and Krakucchanda. At that time, Bodhisattva Sanzhi made a great vow before Buddhas such as Śikhin, saying:

  ‘May I in future lives manifest in the form of spirits and ghosts, in order to teach and transform the countless beings who commit evil due to poverty. Even if there are fierce and terrifying spirits, I will expound to them the Dharma of the Three Vehicles, help them attain liberation, and then accomplish the Bodhi Path.’”

  He continued,

  “At that time, more than twelve thousand ghost kings also made great vows for this world, saying:

  ‘We vow to subdue all sentient beings, cause them to revere the Dharma and seek the Path, be reborn in wholesome destinies, and transcend the ocean of suffering of cyclic existence. If there are evil spirits who destroy the true Dharma, we will certainly go forth to subdue them. Therefore, we take on these ghostly forms in order to tame stubborn beings, lead them to take refuge in the true Dharma, cultivate the Buddha Path, and generate the vow to attain Buddhahood.’”

  Bodhisattva Kuangye then looked at Bodhisattva Yixin and continued,

  “Now that I manifest as a spirit, it is for the sake of all sentient beings in the human world. I possess vajra mantras that prevent all evil spirits from harming beings. Whether Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, or Śūdras of the four castes, I can cause them to abandon evil intentions. I can also cause all birds, insects, and beasts to give rise to wholesome minds, refrain from wrongdoing, and distance themselves from all evil acts, terror, and fear.

  “I have made a great vow to guide sentient beings. By reciting this vajra Dharma-mantra, I cause all beings to refrain from evil conduct. Therefore, I now manifest as a spirit in order to fulfill the vows that I have made.”
