若施白象百,明珠璎珞饰;

Dharma Talk
The Offering of a Spoonful of Rice Broth
During the Buddha’s time, one day the Buddha led his disciples into the city on alms round. When they arrived at the door of a brāhmaṇa’s house, the Buddha stood there silently.
Inside, a woman was busy cooking. Suddenly, she felt a gentle radiance fill the surroundings—unlike the light of the sun or moon. It shone softly upon her, bringing a sense of calm and comfort.
Turning around, she saw the Buddha and the Saṅgha standing at her doorway. Beholding the Buddha’s noble appearance and the dignified bearing of the monks, her heart was instantly filled with joy and reverence. She wished to offer the freshly cooked rice.
However, her husband, who was ignorant of the Dharma and did not believe in it, would surely be displeased if he saw her making offerings. A feeling of sorrow arose in her heart. She felt ashamed of her karmic condition—born as a woman, restricted in many ways, unable to act freely according to her will.
Then she thought of a way. She placed the rice into a bowl, pressed out the liquid, and took a single spoonful of rice broth to offer to the Buddha.
The Buddha gladly accepted it and spoke a verse:
“If one were to give a hundred white elephants,
Adorned with jewels and ornaments—
The merit would not surpass
That of offering a spoonful of broth to the Buddha.”
At that moment, the brāhmaṇa husband came out and heard this. Feeling puzzled, he said:
“What value is there in a mere spoonful of rice broth? How can such a thing be considered so great? Your words seem exaggerated—how can anyone believe this?”
The Buddha replied gently:
“For countless ages, I have cultivated the Six Perfections. What I say and do is true and without error. You should trust that I am one who has realized the truth.”
After a pause, the Buddha continued:
“On the road in Śrāvastī, have you seen the great banyan tree, towering dozens of meters high?”
“Yes,” the brāhmaṇa replied, “in the summer, it provides shade for many people.”
The Buddha asked,
“Since you know how विशाल that tree is, tell me—how big was the seed from which it grew?”
“About the size of a mustard seed,” the brāhmaṇa answered without hesitation.
The Buddha said:“A tiny seed, no bigger than a mustard grain, can grow into a great tree that shades half the sky. Is this strange? It is not—it is the natural law of cause and effect.
Likewise, even a small act of giving, such as this spoonful of rice broth, will yield immeasurable results in the future. Moreover, the Buddha is the supreme field of merit, endowed with unsurpassed qualities. Offering with reverence brings boundless blessings.”
Hearing this teaching, the husband and wife were deeply moved and developed great faith. From then on, they joyfully practiced generosity and frequently made offerings. After their lives ended, they were reborn in heavenly realms, enjoying lasting happiness.
The Buddha further taught:
“Giving is not limited to the wealthy. In the Dharma, generosity is not only about material giving. When you see others give and feel no jealousy or resentment, but instead rejoice, your merit is equal to theirs. Such a simple good deed—why would one not practice it?”
The Buddha concluded:
“The brāhmaṇa couple who offered that spoonful of rice broth have already been reborn in the heavenly realms and will never again fall into lower paths. After thirty kalpas, they will be born again in the human world and will themselves attain Buddhahood.”
This teaching reveals: the greatness of giving lies not in the amount, but in the sincerity of the heart and the purity of intention.
