Mistaking the Buddha for Seeking Offerings

For a period of time, the Buddha was residing at Veṇuvana Bamboo Grove, teaching the Dharma. Each morning, as was his custom, he would put on his robe, take his alms bowl, and go into the city of Rājagṛha for alms.

There was a brāhmaṇa named Fire-and-Seeking (Huo Yu). From afar, he saw the Buddha and immediately prepared fine and delicious food to offer. This happened several times.

However, after two or three occasions, when the Buddha again came to his house on alms round, a thought suddenly arose in the brāhmaṇa’s mind:

“Why does the Buddha come to my house again and again? Could it be that he desires my offerings?”

Knowing the thought that had arisen in his mind, the Buddha said to him:

“In spring, gentle rains fall, and farmers diligently till their fields, sowing seeds again and again. Thus, year after year, they obtain abundant harvests.

In the same way, women conceive multiple times, and cows bear calves repeatedly, giving rise to many lives.

If someone comes to you again and again seeking help, and you are able to give again and again, then through such repeated acts of generosity, you will gain the praise of many, and your merit will become vast and immeasurable.

Giving is like sowing seeds—the more seeds you plant, the greater the harvest. The Three Jewels are the supreme field of merit. If you wish to gain blessings, you should diligently cultivate this fertile field. In this way, no effort is ever wasted, and the resulting merit is boundless.”

Hearing the Buddha’s teaching, the brāhmaṇa felt deeply ashamed of his impure and defiled thoughts, and he sincerely repented.

Just as one must sow in spring to harvest in autumn, one must practice generosity in this life to receive blessings in the future.

If you wish for a certain kind of harvest, you must first cultivate accordingly. Only by giving can one truly receive—and giving with joy accords with the pure practice of loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.
