Transforming the Ghost King Through Patience

When the Buddha was traveling through the kingdom of Magadha, one night he stayed at the dwelling of a ghost named Aṭa. At that time, Aṭa was gathering with other spirits. A lesser ghost hurried to report:

“Congratulations! You are about to receive great merit. Tonight, the Buddha is staying in your home.”

Aṭa replied,

“A stranger has come into my house—I will test whether he is truly the Buddha or just an ordinary man.”

He immediately returned home. Upon seeing the Buddha, he angrily shouted,

  “Ascetic! Get out!”

The Buddha, calm and composed, quietly stepped outside.

Seeing this, Aṭa changed his tone and said,

  “Ascetic! Come in!”

The Buddha, who had eradicated pride and anger, returned without complaint. This happened three times—going out and coming back in. On the fourth time, Aṭa again said:

  “Ascetic! Get out!”

At that moment, the Buddha finally spoke:

“Ghost King, you have already invited me three times. I will not go out again.”

  Aṭa then said,

“If you refuse to leave, then answer my questions. If your answers do not satisfy me, I will tear open your chest, let your blood gush forth, and cast you across the Ganges!”

The Buddha replied peacefully,

“Ask as you wish. I will answer in a way that brings you understanding.”

  The Ghost King asked:

  “What practice brings happiness?

How does one gain great reputation?

What enables one to cross rivers?

What allows one to cross the great ocean?

  How can suffering be abandoned?

  How can purity be attained?”

  The Buddha answered with compassion:

  “Practicing the Dharma brings happiness.

Observing moral discipline spreads one’s good name.

Faith enables one to cross the rivers.

Diligence and heedfulness carry one across the ocean of suffering.

  Effort removes all suffering.

  Wisdom purifies the mind.”

Hearing these teachings, Aṭa the Ghost King rejoiced deeply. He then made a vow to follow the Buddha, protect the Dharma, and uphold the true teaching.

This story shows that even fierce beings can be transformed—not by force, but by patience, wisdom, and compassion.
