摧毁傲慢，令得解脱
一时，佛在舍卫城。有一施主富如多闻天子，长大娶妻共享美好的生活。
其妻怀孕九个月后，生下一个非常庄严的孩子：身色金黄，头如宝伞、黝黑的眉毛、鼻形妙高等等，貌美非凡胜于常人，犹如人非人，故为其取名人非人，施主夫妇用牛奶、酸奶、油饼等精心喂养着。他如海莲般迅速成长，学习并通达了文学历算艺术等一切世间学问，在印度六大城市颇有名望。人们也都互相传闻舍卫城内有这么一个相貌非凡的人非人，并络绎不绝地去亲睹其美貌。他也恃意貌殊而生起了大傲慢心。对任何人都不顶礼不接近、不恭敬，自以为是世上独一无二的佼佼者。后来，他父母觉得：这孩子如此傲慢，这样下去将对他的前途不利，应想法让他去拜见释迦牟尼佛，世尊肯定能折报他的傲慢心。便对人非人说：“孩子，你不要自以为了不起，你如果与释迦牟尼佛的身相相比，你不及佛陀的千分、万分、十万分之一，佛之身相，庄严无比。”他听后，急切地想去拜见世尊，一睹尊容。一天，人非人带着众眷属往舍卫城去拜见世尊，遥见世尊的庄严相好时，他的傲慢心顿时消失，对世尊生起了极大的欢喜心，急去世尊前于足下恭敬顶礼合掌求法。世尊观察他的根界意乐，为他传了相应的法，他以智慧金刚摧毁了二十个萨迦耶见，证得了预流果。并得到父母同意，于释迦佛教法下出家，精进修持，灭尽烦恼，获证罗汉果位。
诸比丘请问：“世尊，以何因缘人非人恃己貌美生大傲慢?以何因缘见佛陀时，傲慢顿时被摧毁，并出家获证罗汉果位?请为吾等演说。”世尊告诸比丘：“不仅是今生，前世我也曾摧毁过他的傲慢，并使他得到四禅五通。汝等谛听：很早以前，印度鹿野苑有一婆罗门，长大娶妻共享生活，妻子怀孕九个月后，生下一个十分庄严的孩子，用牛奶、酸奶、油饼等精心喂养着。长大后，他自恃相貌殊好，不理、不睬、不恭敬任何人，极为傲慢。他父母觉得孩子如此下去将对他无益，应想办法摧毁他的傲慢。当时，在鹿野苑一个寂静处，有一位具足五神通、大神变的仙人，其相貌非凡。他的父母想让孩子拜见这位仙人，便对他说：‘孩子，你不要自恃貌美无比，如果与鹿野苑的那位仙人相比，你不及他的千万分之一。’听到这话，他就前往仙人那里去，当他见到仙人的非凡美貌时，傲慢心立即被摧毁，并对仙人生起了很大的欢喜心，于仙人前恭敬顶礼，听授妙法后，在仙人座下出家修行，获得了四禅五通。诸比丘，你们是怎么想的?当时的仙人即现在行持菩提的我，当时的孩子即现在的人非人。当时我摧毁他的傲慢，使他证得了四禅五通，现在也是我摧毁他的傲慢，使他获证了罗汉果位。另有一段因缘：他曾在人天导师迦叶佛的教法下出家、调伏诸根，所以，现在他得到了解脱。”世尊如是对众等宣说。

Destroying Pride and Attaining Liberation
At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī. There lived a wealthy benefactor, as rich as the celestial king Vaiśravaṇa. After he married, he and his wife lived in great comfort.
When his wife had been pregnant for nine months, she gave birth to an extraordinarily beautiful child. His body shone golden, his head was shaped like a jeweled parasol, his eyebrows were dark and well-formed, his nose high and refined—his appearance surpassed that of ordinary people, almost as if he were not human. Thus, he was named “Not-Human” (Ren Fei Ren).
The parents raised him with great care, nourishing him with milk, yogurt, and fine foods. Like a lotus blooming in the ocean, he grew rapidly and mastered literature, mathematics, and all worldly arts. He became widely known across the six great cities of India. People traveled from afar just to behold his extraordinary beauty.
However, because of his appearance, he developed great arrogance. He showed no respect to anyone—he did not bow, did not approach others humbly, and regarded himself as unmatched in the world.
His parents became concerned:
“If this arrogance continues, it will harm his future. Only the Buddha can subdue his pride.”
So they said to him,
“My child, do not think too highly of yourself. Compared with the body of Śākyamuni Buddha, you are not even one-thousandth, one-ten-thousandth, or one-hundred-thousandth as magnificent. The Buddha’s form is supremely adorned.”
Hearing this, he eagerly wished to see the Buddha. One day, he went with his attendants to meet the Blessed One. From afar, upon seeing the Buddha’s majestic and perfect appearance, his arrogance instantly vanished. A deep joy arose in his heart. He hurried forward, prostrated at the Buddha’s feet, joined his palms, and requested the teaching.
The Buddha, perceiving his disposition and capacity, taught him the appropriate Dharma. With the vajra-like wisdom, he shattered twenty forms of self-view (sakkāya-diṭṭhi) and attained the fruit of Stream-Entry (Sotāpanna). With his parents’ consent, he ordained under the Buddha’s teaching, practiced diligently, eliminated all afflictions, and ultimately attained Arhatship.
The bhikkhus then asked:
“World-Honored One, by what causes did this person become so arrogant due to his beauty? And by what causes did his pride vanish upon seeing the Buddha, leading him to renounce and attain Arhatship?”
The Buddha replied:
“Not only in this life, but also in a past life, I subdued his arrogance and led him to attain the four dhyānas and five supernormal powers.
Long ago, in Deer Park, there was a brāhmaṇa who had a son of extraordinary beauty. Like in this life, the child grew arrogant, showing no respect to others. His parents, worried for him, told him of a sage dwelling in a quiet place—one who possessed great spiritual powers and an incomparable appearance.
They said, ‘If you compare yourself to that sage, you are not even a fraction of his excellence.’ The child went to meet the sage. Upon seeing the sage’s extraordinary presence, his arrogance immediately collapsed. Filled with joy, he paid respect, received the teaching, and ordained under the sage. Through practice, he attained the four dhyānas and five supernormal powers.
Bhikkhus, that sage was I in a previous life, practicing the path of enlightenment. That child is this present “Not-Human.” Then, as now, I destroyed his arrogance and led him to attainment.
There is yet another cause: under the teaching of Kāśyapa Buddha, he once renounced and disciplined his faculties well. Therefore, in this life, he was able to attain liberation.”
Thus did the Buddha explain to the assembly.
This teaching shows: arrogance blinds the mind, but true wisdom and direct encounter with truth can shatter pride, opening the path to liberation.
