Sitting Meditation

The Process of Energy Rising and Descending

During meditation, many practitioners notice subtle “energy” sensations—sometimes rising, sometimes descending. These experiences are not goals or signs of attainment, but natural responses as the body and mind relax, integrate, and become more sensitive.Understanding this process helps maintain balance and avoid unnecessary fixation.

1.What Is “Energy” in Meditation?

1.Not a mysterious force

It is not something added from outside, but the body–mind system’s natural activity becoming perceptible.

2.Closely related to breath and the nervous system

As breathing becomes natural and refined, the nervous system shifts toward balance.

3.A result of increased awareness

Stronger sensations often mean clearer perception, not abnormal change.

2.Common Signs of Rising Energy

1.Warmth or movement along the spine

A subtle upward flow from the lower back.

2.Clarity or lightness in the head

A sense of openness without agitation.

3.Finer breathing

Breath becomes gentle and continuous.

4.Mental uplift

Clear awareness without excitement.

3.Common Signs of Descending Energy

1.A grounded center of gravity

Attention settles in the abdomen, pelvis, or legs.

2.Increased stability and calm

Emotions soften; thoughts slow.

3.Deep relaxation without dullness

The body feels heavy yet awake.

4.A sense of wholeness

Awareness spreads through the entire body.

4.Why Do Rising and Descending Alternate?

1.The body–mind seeks balance

Rising brings clarity;descending brings stability.

2.Awareness integrates the whole body

Attention moves rather than stays fixed.

3.Old tension releases gradually

This naturally creates waves of change.

5.How to Relate Skillfully to These Movements

1.Do not chase rising sensations

Forcing upward movement can cause imbalance.

2.Do not resist descending

Grounding is essential, not regression.

3.Center on awareness, not sensation

Sensations come and go; awareness remains.

4.Let the breath regulate naturally

Breathing is the safest stabilizer.

6.Common Pitfalls and Guidance

1.Do not judge progress by energy intensity

Strong sensations do not equal awakening.

2.Do not cling to special experiences

Clinging reintroduces tension.

3.Return to the body if discomfort arises

Grounding through feet, abdomen, or breath restores balance.

Conclusion

The rising and descending of energy reflect the body–mind’s natural path toward balance.Without chasing or resisting, and by resting in stable awareness, practice unfolds safely and maturely.
