Sitting Meditation

Awareness of Baihui and Mingmen

As meditation deepens, awareness expands beyond breath and thought into the body’s overall sense of integration and vitality.Baihui (at the crown) and Mingmen (at the lower back)are often noticed as key points, yet what truly matters is not the points themselves, but the stability, softness, and continuity of awareness.

1.What Is Awareness of Baihui and Mingmen?

1.Awareness of Baihui

Located at the crown of the head,it is often felt as lightness, openness, or spacious clarity.

2.Awareness of Mingmen

Located near the lower spine,it is commonly experienced as warmth, grounding, or inner support.

3.Not concentration, but inclusion

These areas are not forced into focus;they naturally enter awareness as the body relaxes.

2.Why Do These Areas Become Noticeable?

1.Vertical integration of the body

Relaxation allows awareness to extend along the spine.

2.Refined and steady breathing

As breath becomes subtle, awareness spreads beyond localized points.

3.Unified mind and breath

When the mind stabilizes, the body is perceived as a whole.

3.A Skillful Way to Relate to These Sensations

1.Keep whole-body awareness

Let these areas appear within a broader field of awareness.

2.Stay light and non-intrusive

Over-focusing can create pressure or discomfort.

3.Let breathing mediate naturally

Inhalation and exhalation gently organize awareness without intentional manipulation.

4.Common and Normal Experiences

1.Light expansion or subtle movement at the crown

Often a sign of refined awareness.

2.Warmth and stability in the lower back

Related to deep physical relaxation.

3.A sense of vertical continuity

This reflects integration, not energetic force.

5.Common Pitfalls to Avoid

1.Chasing sensations

Sensations change; chasing disrupts balance.

2.Forcing mental direction

Pushing awareness upward or downward may cause strain.

3.Ignoring daily stability

If discomfort or agitation appears, return to basic breath and body grounding.

6.When Awareness Matures

1.Integration without fixation

The whole body is present; points lose importance.

2.Greater stability and clarity

Not excitement, but steadiness.

3.Simplicity returns

Practice becomes less about phenomena and more about sustained presence.

Conclusion

Awareness of Baihui and Mingmen is not a goal but a natural sign of relaxation and maturation. When awareness is gentle and inclusive, stability matters more than sensation.
