落荒而逃的魔鬼
从前，在舍卫城郊外有一个非常荒凉偏僻的地方，那里住着一个魔鬼。这个魔鬼善于变化自己的形体，经常在这一带作祟，祸害不少人。
曾经有一个远来的商人，带着不少香料，准备到舍卫国做生意。当他走到城郊时，天色渐渐黑了下来，四周空无一人，只有半人高的野草和几株杂树在夜色中摇动着。
走了一会儿，他的肚子开始饿了，准备先吃点粮食再进城投宿。他走到一棵树下，放下货物，取出粮食慢慢吃了起来。他一边吃着干粮，一边闭上眼睛盘算这些货物出手后能赚到多少钱。
这时候，魔鬼悄悄出现了，他闻到从包裹里散发出来的香气，猜想这应该就是人们常说的香料。魔鬼趁这个商人不注意，化成一道白烟，随着吞下去的干粮一起进入商人的肚子里，这商人却丝毫没有察觉。
商人填饱肚子后，又拿起包裹，站起身继续向舍卫城赶去。走了不久，肚子开始发出声音，他心想：「奇怪？刚才吃了那么多干粮，怎么肚子又叫了？」
商人忍耐着走了几步，肚子却开始痛起来，而且越来越痛，仿佛有什么东西在肚子里蠕动着。他实在忍受不住，就扔下装有货物的包裹，在地上翻滚起来！
他越滚离包裹越远。这时候，魔鬼趁机化作一道白烟从商人的嘴里散出来，然后拾起包裹跑掉了。结果这个商人不仅被魔鬼折磨得死去活来，还丢掉许多香料。
正因为魔鬼常常这样作崇，所以很少有人敢到这里来，这里也就显得更加荒凉恐怖了。
有一天，佛陀的弟子目犍连尊者有事去舍卫城外三十里远的一个寺院中，傍晚回来时恰巧路过这里。目犍连一走到这里，马上感到一阵寒意。
天快黑了，目犍连急急忙忙地赶路。等到目犍连走近时，魔鬼便从树后闪出身来，化成一道白烟，从目犍连的鼻子进到他肚子里。目犍连因为一心赶路，并没有注意到。
目犍连走着走着，突然觉得肚子咕噜咕噜地叫了起来，而且声音越来越大，最后竟然像雷声一样。目犍连觉得十分奇怪，他停下脚步，在路边的杂草丛中盘腿坐了下来，摒除一切杂念后，发现原来是个魔鬼在自己腹中捣乱，于是目犍连大声地对魔鬼说：
「你这个魔鬼还是快出来吧！我是佛陀的弟子，你根本不能伤害到我，所以赶快离开吧！否则我会用法力将你打入地狱！」
魔鬼听了之后，以为目犍连只是吓他而已，仍然继续在目犍连的肚子里作怪。
目犍连见魔鬼还不出来，就对他说：
「魔鬼你快出来吧！不要再作怪了，我是佛陀的弟子目犍连。」
魔鬼一听到这句话，不由得害怕起来，因为他知道目犍连是佛陀弟子中最有神通力的一个，于是匆忙化做一道白烟，从目犍连张开的口中钻了出来，然后跪在地上请求目犍连宽恕他。
目犍连原谅了这个魔鬼，并告诫他以后不可以再骚扰过往的行人。魔鬼答应后立刻一溜烟地跑掉了。
从此，魔鬼再也不敢出来作祟，而这个地方的人也渐渐多了起来。

The Demon Who Fled in Fright
Thus have I heard:
At one time, near the outskirts of Śrāvastī, there was a desolate and forsaken place. In that place dwelt a demon, skilled in transformations, who often wrought mischief and harmed many who passed by.
Once, a merchant from afar, bearing much spice to sell in Śrāvastī, came near the city at dusk. The fields lay empty, with only tall grass and scattered trees swaying in the wind.
The merchant, wearied and hungry, placed his bundle beneath a tree and took food to eat. As he ate, the demon, drawn by the fragrance of spice, transformed into a white vapor, and entered with the food into the merchant’s belly. The merchant knew nothing of it.
Soon after, as he walked again, his stomach rumbled and pain arose, as if something were moving within. Unable to endure, he cast aside his bundle and rolled upon the ground in agony. Then the demon slipped out from his mouth in the form of smoke, seized the bundle, and fled. Thus the merchant, tormented and robbed, lost both peace and wealth.
Because of such deeds, few dared pass that way, and the place grew ever more dreadful and desolate.
At another time, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, a foremost disciple of the Blessed One, was returning at dusk from a monastery thirty leagues from Śrāvastī. As he passed by that place, he felt a chill and hastened his steps.
The demon, lurking there, sprang forth and, turning to smoke, entered the elder’s body through his nostrils. Yet Maudgalyāyana, intent upon his journey, gave no heed. Soon, his belly rumbled like thunder. He sat down calmly in the grass, entered deep composure, and discerned the demon within.
He spoke aloud:
“Come forth, O demon! Know that I am a disciple of the Blessed One. You cannot harm me. Depart at once, lest by my power I cast you into hell!”
The demon, thinking these words mere threat, continued his mischief within.
Then Maudgalyāyana declared again:
“Come forth, O demon! I am Maudgalyāyana, foremost in spiritual power among the disciples of the Buddha!”
Hearing this name, the demon was stricken with fear, for he knew the elder’s might. Hastily he fled out as smoke from the elder’s mouth, and, kneeling upon the ground, begged forgiveness.
The venerable one forgave him, and admonished:
“Trouble not travelers again.”
The demon bowed in assent, then fled away. From that time forth, he ceased his mischief, and people once more passed freely through that place.
