Humility and Forbearance Bring Longevity
There was once a young boy, about five or six years of age, who came before the Buddha and said:
“O Great Buddha, I pray that you grant me long life.”
The Buddha, with gentle kindness, said:
“Good child, why do you, at such a young age, seek longevity?”
The child replied respectfully:
“A teacher of another path has told me that I possess both merit and wisdom, yet am destined for a short life. Compassionate Buddha, I pray that you teach me a skillful means by which my lifespan may be extended.”
The Buddha said:
“Good child, the happiness and suffering, the fortune and misfortune that each person experiences are all the results of their own wholesome and unwholesome actions. They are not governed by the power of others.”
The Buddha continued:
“Good child, if you wish to obtain longevity and peace, you must be humble and forbearing toward others, and always show respect.”
The child accepted the Buddha’s teaching and from that time onward practiced humility, forbearance, and reverence in his daily life.
Several months later, a king of spirits, bearing a past grudge against the child, transformed himself into a brāhmaṇa and came intending to take the child’s life. The child, unaware that this was a spirit king in disguise, received him as usual with reverence, making offerings and bowing with humility and patience.
The spirit king then thought:
“This child is one of great goodness. How could I harm him? One who shows respect to others should always be respected; one who is humble and forbearing should constantly receive blessings and happiness.”
With this thought, his anger immediately ceased, and he departed.
Thus, through humility and reverence, the young child avoided harm and gained an extension of his life. This teaches us that if one practices the Buddha-Dharma and consistently upholds humility and forbearance, one may naturally transform others through virtue.
