Sitting Meditation

Stability in Stillness: From Coarse Thoughts to Subtle Thoughts

In meditation, thoughts rarely disappear all at once. They gradually shift from coarse thoughts to subtle thoughts.Progress does not mean having no thoughts—it means remaining stable even when thoughts are present. This transition reflects the natural maturation of inner stability.

1.What Are Coarse Thoughts?

1.Obvious, continuous, emotionally charged

Memories, planning, worries, judgments that easily capture attention.

2.Strongly tied to the sense of self

Thoughts revolve around “me” and “my concerns.”

3.Closely linked to bodily tension

Coarse thoughts often disturb both body and mind.

2.What Are Subtle Thoughts?

1.Brief and non-narrative

They do not form full mental stories.

2.Weakened self-reference

Thoughts arise without strong identification.

3.No longer disturbing stability

Like small ripples on calm water.

3.The Natural Shift From Coarse to Subtle Thoughts

1.Continuous awareness develops

Less forgetting, more presence.

2.The body relaxes deeply

Physical ease softens mental activity.

3.Breathing becomes natural and refined

Mind and breath harmonize.

4.The attitude toward thoughts changes

No chasing, no resisting.

4.Stability Is Not the Absence of Thought

1.Stability comes before silence

Forcing silence creates tension.

2.Thoughts are not the problem

Attachment to them is.

3.Stability arises from awareness, not control

Control tightens;awareness releases.

5.Remaining Stable Amid Subtle Thoughts

1.Do not amplify thoughts

Notice and let go.

2.Rest in the whole field of experience

Body, breath, and awareness together.

3.Allow subtle thoughts to exist

They come and go naturally.

4.Trust stability itself

No extra effort is required.

6.Common Pitfalls and Reminders

1.Do not rank stages

Coarse and subtle thoughts are both natural.

2.Do not aim for subtle thoughts

Aiming makes the mind coarse again.

3.Do not fear returning coarse thoughts

Fluctuation is part of practice.

Conclusion

The shift from coarse to subtle thoughts is not achieved through suppression, but through the maturation of awareness. When stability is genuine, thoughts—coarse or subtle—no longer disturb the heart.
