佛陀的爱怜无处不在
古时候，在薄佑国有个名叫常悲的菩萨。他对佛法专一精进，可是当时在他的国家里，佛寺里的僧人都表里不一，表面上在供佛，实际上则败坏佛规，背叛佛义。因为这些佛门败类违法非为，很快的，整个国家的人都不信奉佛法了。
常悲菩萨不愿看到这一切，便抛下妻子儿女，一个人到山中隐居修行。他每天喝山泉水，吃树上的野果，过着苦行的日子。
「我生不逢时，遇不到佛陀，遇不到好菩萨，我该怎么办？」
他悲恸地对天空呼喊，这声音传到天上，感动了天神，天神便下到半空中对常悲菩萨说：
「贤明的菩萨，你去寻找明度无极圣典，好好诵读，贯通经意，确实奉行经义，就一定会成佛的。」
「我该到那里去求这至尊的佛法呢？」
「你朝着正东方走吧！不要害怕艰难，你一定能找到明度无极圣典的。」
天神的指点使常悲菩萨感激不尽，他不断对着上天磕头，说道：
「我一定照您的指示去做。」
「你必须努力精进，才能找到圣典！」天神说完这话便不见了。
常悲菩萨朝着太阳升起的方向出发，走上漫漫寻找佛经的艰辛路途。他怀着无比坚定的信心，一连几天披星戴月地赶路，走到双脚肿痛仍不停赶路，也不知前面还有多远的路程，只是努力往前走。
常悲菩萨真诚专一的精神感动了佛陀，于是佛陀飞到他头上几重天的地方，跟他一起前行，每天讲经给他听。
佛陀赞叹地说：「你真是一片诚心啊！像你这样的菩萨已经不多见了。你从这里继续东行二万里，便到了健陀越国，那里住着很多菩萨，其中有个菩萨名叫法来，他圣德高明，通晓各种经典，反复教化人们，那本经——明度无极经，我想他一定会替你讲解，让你诵读的。」佛陀说完便不见了踪影。
常悲菩萨感恩佛对他的指点，更加坚定了求经的信心。经过千辛万苦，常悲菩萨终于进入健陀越国，漫漫求经之路马上就要到达了。
这时，常悲菩萨的心中无比激动，再次虔诚地对天空说着：
「佛陀啊！您的爱怜真是无处不在啊！」

The Compassion of the Buddha Pervades All Places
In ancient times, within the land of Boyou, there was a Bodhisattva named Changbei, “Ever-Sorrowing.” He was wholly devoted to the Buddha-Dharma and cultivated with single-minded diligence. Yet in that kingdom, the monks within the monasteries were not upright in conduct. Outwardly they appeared to make offerings to the Buddha, but inwardly they corrupted the precepts and betrayed the true meaning of the Dharma. Because of such unworthy disciples who acted unlawfully and against righteousness, the people of the entire land soon lost faith in the Buddha-Dharma.
Changbei Bodhisattva, unwilling to behold such decline, left behind wife and children and went alone into the mountains to dwell in seclusion and practice. Each day he drank from mountain springs and ate wild fruits from the trees, living a life of austere asceticism.
He cried out in sorrow to the heavens:
“I am born in an unfortunate age. I encounter neither a Buddha nor noble Bodhisattvas. What then am I to do?”
His lamentation reached the celestial realms and moved the devas. A heavenly being descended to midair and spoke to him:
“Noble Bodhisattva, seek the Sacred Scripture of Boundless Illumination. Recite it well, penetrate its meaning, and faithfully practice according to its teaching. By so doing, you shall surely attain Buddhahood.”
Changbei Bodhisattva asked,
“Where shall I go to seek this supreme Dharma?”
The deva replied,
“Journey toward the due east. Do not fear hardship. There you shall certainly find the Scripture of Boundless Illumination.”
Receiving this guidance, Changbei Bodhisattva was filled with gratitude. He bowed repeatedly toward the heavens and said:
“I shall certainly follow your instruction.”
The deva further said,
“You must exert yourself with earnest vigor; only thus will you obtain the sacred scripture.”
Having spoken these words, the deva disappeared.
Changbei Bodhisattva set forth in the direction of the rising sun and embarked upon a long and arduous quest for the sacred text. With unwavering faith, he traveled for many days and nights beneath the stars and moon. Even when his feet swelled with pain, he did not cease. Knowing not how far the road extended before him, he simply pressed onward.
The sincerity and single-minded devotion of Changbei Bodhisattva moved the Buddha. Thereupon the Buddha manifested in the heavens several realms above his head and accompanied him unseen, expounding the Dharma to him each day.
The Buddha praised him, saying:
“Your heart is indeed pure and resolute. Bodhisattvas such as you are rare in this world. Continue eastward for twenty thousand li, and you will arrive at the land of Gandavyūha. There dwell many Bodhisattvas. Among them is one named Dharmodgata, whose virtue is lofty and whose understanding of the scriptures is profound. He tirelessly teaches and transforms beings. The Scripture of Boundless Illumination — surely he will expound it for you and permit you to recite it.”
When the Buddha had spoken thus, he vanished from sight.
Changbei Bodhisattva, deeply grateful for the Buddha’s compassionate guidance, strengthened yet further his resolve to obtain the scripture. After enduring countless hardships, he at last entered the land of Gandavyūha. The long road of seeking the Dharma was nearing its fulfillment.
At that moment, his heart overflowed with reverence and joy. Once more he addressed the heavens with utmost devotion:
“O Buddha! Truly, your loving compassion pervades all places without exception.”
