Sitting Meditation

Seeing Light and Feeling Energy in Meditation

During meditation, practitioners may experience light phenomena or sensations of energy flowing through the body. These experiences are common when the mind becomes quiet and awareness sharpens. They are neither mystical achievements nor signs of awakening, but natural reactions of the body–mind system.Understanding them helps practitioners avoid confusion and deepen their practice safely.

1.What Is the “Light” Seen in Meditation?

1.A response of the visual system

With eyes half-closed or closed, visual activity decreases, generating flickers, brightness, or patterns.

2.Heightened sensitivity in stillness

When thoughts fade, subtle visual signals become more noticeable.

3.A sense of inner brightness

Meditative stability often brings a natural luminosity.

4.Not external light but a mental appearance

The light is a product of awareness, not the outside world.

2.What Are “Energy Sensations”?

1.Enhanced awareness of bodily processes

Blood flow, nerve pulses, and subtle movements become clearer.

2.Natural reactions of a relaxed nervous system

Tension dissolves, revealing warmth, tingling, or vibration.

3.Increased interoceptive sensitivity

Awareness penetrates deeper layers of bodily sensation.

4.A physiological, not supernatural, experience

Energy sensations reflect the body returning to balance.

3.Types of Light and Energy Experiences

1.Light Phenomena

White or golden light

Flickering points

Rings or waves

Soft brightness

Expanded luminous field

2.Energy Sensations

Warmth or coolness

Tingling or vibration

Flowing or pulsating energy

Expansion or lightness

A sense of spaciousness or emptiness

All arise from refined awareness and relaxed body–mind conditions.

4.Why Do These Experiences Arise?

1.Stillness → heightened perception

Subtle sensations become detectable.

2.Relaxation → smoother internal flow

Less physical tension means more noticeable movement.

3.Fewer thoughts → amplified inner phenomena

Internal signals stand out more clearly.

4.Clarity → luminosity

A quiet mind often feels bright.

5.The Correct Attitude Toward These Experiences

1.Do not cling

These are not signs of attainment.

2.Do not fear

Even strong sensations are harmless.

3.Do not reject

Resistance creates tension.

4.Do not interpret mystically

Avoid labeling them as “spiritual visions,” “third eye opening,” etc.

5.Return to simple awareness

Let phenomena arise and fade naturally.

6.Using These Experiences for Deeper Practice

1.Treat them as objects of observation

Observe their arising and passing.

2.Contemplate impermanence

Light and energy constantly shift.

3.Contemplate non-self

These sensations are not “me,” only phenomena.

4.Contemplate dependent arising

They appear under certain conditions and disappear the same way.

5.Let them stabilize the mind

Neither clinging nor rejecting allows deeper samādhi to unfold.

Conclusion

Light and energy sensations in meditation are natural results of quieting the mind and relaxing the body. They are not achievements but temporary phenomena. With non-clinging awareness, these experiences become supportive tools for deeper concentration and insight.
