Dharma Talk
The Karmic Retribution of Anger
When the venerable master Upagupta expounded the Dharma, he often instructed his disciples:
“A bhikṣu should constantly contemplate the Way and cultivate with diligence, never falling into negligence. By such effort, one may attain the fruit of Stream-Entry (Srotāpanna).”
There was once a bhikṣu who, upon hearing these words, devoted himself earnestly to the study of the scriptures and treatises, wholeheartedly aspiring to attain the fruit of Stream-Entry. Master Upagupta perceived the thoughts within his mind and therefore brought him along on a journey to the land of Mathurā.
After several days of traveling and receiving alms along the way, they arrived at a settlement inhabited by the lowest caste of people known as the Caṇḍālas. The people there lived in great poverty, making their livelihood through fishing and slaughter.
They came to a Caṇḍāla household and saw a child who had already attained the fruit of Stream-Entry. Yet he was afflicted with a dreadful illness: the flesh upon his body had been eaten away by worms, and foul odors constantly issued from his mouth.
Pointing to the child, Master Upagupta said to the bhikṣu:
“Observe this child. Though he has attained the fruit of Stream-Entry, he must still endure such suffering.”
The bhikṣu asked in perplexity:
“Why must one who has already attained the fruit of Stream-Entry still undergo such suffering?”
Master Upagupta replied:
“In a former life, this child was a monk. Later he became the Vinaya steward in a monastery, responsible for supervising the conduct and practices of the monastic community.
“One day the monks were all seated in the meditation hall practicing in silence. Among them was an Arhat who had contracted a strange illness. When the illness flared up, his whole body itched unbearably. At that very moment the attack came upon him, and he could not help scratching himself, producing a ‘scratch, scratch, scratch’ sound.
“Hearing this noise, the steward grew angry and said:
‘Have evil worms devoured you, that you make such an unpleasant sound?’
“Having spoken thus, he seized the Arhat and dragged him out, abandoning him in the house of a Caṇḍāla.
“The Arhat then said to him:
‘You should devote yourself wholeheartedly to cultivation and cast aside distracting thoughts, lest you suffer in a future life.’
“Hearing these words, the steward awakened with remorse and immediately knelt to repent. Through diligent cultivation he eventually attained the first fruit — the fruit of Stream-Entry. However, afterward he ceased to exert himself and gradually gave way to negligence and indulgence.
“The child you see today is the rebirth of that steward. Because he once cast an Arhat into the house of a Caṇḍāla, the karmic cause has ripened in this life: he himself has been born in a Caṇḍāla household and must suffer such retribution.”
Upon hearing this account, the bhikṣu was filled with both astonishment and dread. After returning, he redoubled his efforts in diligent cultivation, never again daring to lapse into negligence. In the end he attained the fourth fruit — the fruit of Arhatship.
