Sitting Meditation
From Coarse Concentration to Subtle Concentration
Concentration develops gradually—from coarse, obvious stability to subtle, refined stillness. Coarse concentration quiets the mind; subtle concentration allows it to become naturally clear and deeply calm. Understanding this progression prevents confusion and supports genuine meditation.
1.What Is Coarse Concentration?
1.The mind stays on an object
Breath, body sensations, sound—even if it wanders, it returns.
2.Thoughts decrease but remain noticeable
The mind is calmer but not silent.
3.The body relaxes, breath slows
A general sense of ease appears.
4.Stability is clear and tangible
You can feel:
“I’m more calm now.”
Meaning
Coarse concentration is the foundation for deeper states.
2.Common Signs of Coarse Concentration
1.Thoughts slow down
2.Breath lengthens
3.Emotions calm
4.Body alternates between ease and tension
5.Easily disturbed by external sounds
These are natural stages.
3.What Is Subtle Concentration?
1.Thoughts no longer pull the mind
They arise lightly but have no power.
2.Breath becomes soft and delicate
Sometimes almost imperceptible.
3.Deep physical ease
Lightness, stability, spaciousness.
4.Continuous natural calm
Effortless stability without forcing.
5.A sense of inner brightness
Not visual brightness—clarity.
Meaning
Subtle concentration is the ground for deep insight.
4.How to Move from Coarse to Subtle Concentration
1.Relaxation over effort
Force keeps you in coarse concentration.
2.Allow breath to refine naturally
Never control or manipulate.
3.Make awareness gentle
Shift from “focusing” to “feeling.”
4.Avoid chasing states
Desire blocks subtle concentration.
5.Let stability arise by itself
Natural steadiness, not forced attention.
5.Signs Subtle Concentration Has Arisen
1.Very comfortable sitting
2.Mind still like a calm lake
3.Thoughts faint like mist
4.Breath extremely soft
5.Minimal emotional movement
6.Clear, effortless awareness
Subtle concentration is calm and bright.
6.Three Practical Steps to Transition
1.Stabilize the body
Comfortable and upright posture.
2.Anchor in the breath
Gentle, natural awareness.
3.Expand into overall calmness
Awareness becomes broader and lighter.
This shift leads from coarse to subtle concentration.
Conclusion
Coarse concentration stops the mind from wandering;subtle concentration lets it rest deeply and clearly. The transition comes through relaxation, natural breath, and gentle awareness—not through force. When the mind becomes soft, refined, and bright, coarse concentration transforms into subtle concentration.
