Offering a Parasol
One day, the Buddha led his disciples to a village in the land of Uttarakuru to teach and transform beings. It was the height of summer—scorching hot, with not a single breeze.
A shepherd saw the Buddha radiating light and thought to himself:“The Buddha is the most honored in the three realms. How great he must be—yet he still travels and teaches in such unbearable heat. How difficult this must be!”
Moved by reverence, the shepherd quickly wove a parasol out of grass and followed behind the Buddha, holding it up to shade him from the sun. After some time, he realized his flock had wandered far away, so he set down the parasol and hurried back to tend to them.
The Buddha saw this and gently smiled.
At that moment, countless rays of light issued forth from the Buddha’s mouth, dividing into millions of beams that illuminated all directions—from the Heaven of the Thirty-Three above to the eighteen hells below. All beings—animals, hungry ghosts, and others—were bathed in this radiant light. Devas, nāgas, and asuras throughout the three realms, seeing this brilliance, came before the Buddha offering incense, flowers, and celestial music in homage.
Ānanda knelt before the Buddha and asked:“World-Honored One, you do not smile without cause. Please explain the reason.”
The Buddha said:“Ānanda, did you see that shepherd?”
“Yes, I did.”
“That shepherd, with a heart of reverence, made a parasol to shade the Buddha. Because of this merit, for thirteen kalpas he will be reborn among gods and humans in noble conditions, always sheltered by parasols adorned with the seven treasures. After thirteen kalpas, he will renounce the world, practice the path, and attain the fruit of a Pratyekabuddha, named Anuputta.”
Hearing the Buddha’s words, everyone rejoiced deeply. They paid homage to the Buddha and departed with uplifted hearts.
This teaching shows: even a small act of sincere offering, when done with pure intention, can bring vast and inconceivable merit.
