Sitting Meditation
The Integration of Stillness and Clarity
In meditation, stillness and clarity are often seen as separate states—one emphasizing calm and stability, the other emphasizing awareness and insight.Mature practice, however, is not choosing one over the other, but allowing them to merge naturally:still without dullness, clear without restlessness.
1.What Is Stillness?
1.The settling of the mind
Fewer distractions,less reactivity.
2.Stability without rigidity
Unmoved,yet alive.
3.The aspect of concentration
Stillness reflects meditative stability.
2.What Is Clarity?
1.Clear awareness
Body, breath, thoughts, and sensations are known directly.
2.Brightness without analysis
Not thinking,but seeing.
3.The aspect of insight
Clarity reflects wisdom.
3.The Imbalance of One Without the Other
1.Stillness alone can lead to dullness
Calm without awareness becomes stagnation.
2.Clarity alone can lead to agitation
Awareness without stability becomes scattered.
3.Imbalance arises from separation
Seeing stillness and clarity as opposites limits practice.
4.How Do Stillness and Clarity Integrate?
1.Maintain awareness within calm
Knowing that the mind is settled.
2.Remain grounded within awareness
Observing without chasing.
3.Let go of control
Integration arises naturally when effort relaxes.
5.The Experience of Integration
1.Calm and awake
Stable yet alert.
2.Thoughts arise without disturbance
They appear and dissolve without breaking composure.
3.Meditation extends into daily life
Integration is lived, not confined to sitting.
6.Signs of Maturity
1.Less effort, more naturalness
Awareness sustains itself.
2.No fixation on special states
Ordinariness reveals depth.
3.Greater ease with circumstances
Both pleasant and unpleasant are held with balance.
Conclusion
Stillness brings stability;clarity brings understanding. When the division between them dissolves, clarity rests in stillness, stillness shines with clarity—and practice matures naturally.
