Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva Attends the Banquet
While practicing the path, King Ajātaśatru gave rise to many doubts. Knowing that Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva possessed immeasurable wisdom, he wished to request his assistance in resolving these questions. Therefore, he invited Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva to the royal palace for a meal.
Seeing the king’s sincerity, Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva agreed that on the following day he would personally lead his disciples and many devas to attend the banquet. Hearing that the Bodhisattva had consented, King Ajātaśatru asked joyfully,
“Revered Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva, how many will be in attendance tomorrow, that I may prepare sufficient vegetarian offerings?”
At that moment, the Venerable Śāriputra, standing beside Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva, answered on his behalf,
“Approximately five hundred.”
The king returned to the palace and at once ordered preparations to begin in every direction. Inside and outside, all were busily engaged.
On the following day, the king and his ministers waited outside the palace to welcome the honored guests. From afar they saw Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva and his retinue slowly approaching, numbering about twenty-two thousand five hundred.
The king was greatly startled and thought to himself,“This is disastrous. I prepared food for only five hundred people, yet today so many have arrived. What is to be done?”
While he was in distress, suddenly a deva-king named “Resting Mind” and an immortal named “Golden Pibhi” appeared beside him and said,
“Great King, do not be troubled. The boundless spiritual power of Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva is unfathomable.”
Hearing their words, the king felt somewhat reassured and quickly ushered the assembly into the palace.
When everyone had taken their seats, the king bowed to Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva to express his heartfelt welcome, saying,
“Please forgive us. The utensils and provisions prepared in the palace are few. I have already ordered additional preparations. Kindly wait a little while.”
Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva said to the king,“You have already done what should be done. There is no need to trouble yourself further. Please rest for a moment.”
Then Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva softly uttered a mantra. Immediately, golden bowls, silver bowls, and bronze bowls, radiant with light, descended from the heavens in orderly array, as though lining up one after another. The Bodhisattva then said to the king,“You may now distribute the food.”
As the food was served, the king observed with astonishment that each time a bowl was filled, the food in the container became full again, as though none had been taken. Even after more than twenty thousand people had received their meal, the prepared food had not diminished in the slightest, remaining just as abundant as before.
After the meal, the Bodhisattvas tossed their bowls into the sky, where they remained suspended in midair. When Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva had finished expounding a portion of the Buddha-Dharma to the king, the bowls suddenly disappeared without trace.
When the banquet was concluded, the king requested Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva to resolve his doubts for the sake of all beings. The Bodhisattva’s exposition was subtle and profound, entering deeply into principle and meaning. All who listened were filled with Dharma-joy and gained deep insight, and King Ajātaśatru himself benefited beyond measure.
At last, King Ajātaśatru said with reverence,
“Maṇjuśrī Bodhisattva is truly a sage filled with wisdom!”
Thus his doubts regarding the Buddha-Dharma were completely dispelled.
