The Poor Woman Who Attained the Path

At Jetavana Monastery, the monastic community lived in harmony under the guidance of Śākyamuni Buddha, diligently practicing the Dharma. Each day, the solemn chanting and dignified conduct of the monks created an atmosphere of serenity and sacredness. Even the poor families living nearby were influenced by what they saw and heard, gradually giving rise to joy and forming wholesome connections with the Three Jewels.

A poor woman often gazed toward the monastery and thought,“How magnificent the Buddha is, how harmonious the Saṅgha! If only I could make offerings to them—how wonderful that would be!”

But when she looked around her own home, she sighed. She had nothing—no wealth, no possessions.

“Must I give up the chance to offer to the Three Jewels?”

Suddenly, a thought arose:“Though I have no money, I can offer my effort. Is that not also a form of giving?”

From that day on, she resolved to clean the monastery daily.

True to her word, she arrived early the next morning and carefully swept and cleaned every corner until it was spotless. The monks were thus able to practice in a pure and dignified environment, and all who came felt joy and reverence. Day after day, she continued without interruption, her sincerity unwavering.

Nearby lived a wealthy elder. One day, while traveling in his carriage, he arrived at a wondrous place. There, he saw in the distance a vast expanse of magnificent dwellings, built of the seven treasures, radiant and resplendent in the sunlight. Astonished, he called out:

“Whose splendid and extraordinary residences are these?”

A voice replied from afar:“These are being built for a poor yet virtuous woman. Because she diligently sweeps the Buddha’s monastery, she has planted immeasurable merit. In the future, she will be reborn here. I am now constructing these dwellings for her.”

Hearing this, the elder rejoiced greatly and said,“I must find this person of great merit and obtain these dwellings from her.”

He immediately set out, and to his surprise, arrived at the humble, dilapidated home of the poor woman.

He said to her,“You possess something very precious. Would you be willing to give it to me? I will offer you five hundred pieces of gold.”

The woman was puzzled:“I have always been poor—what valuable thing could I possibly have?”

The elder replied,“It does not matter. Just agree.”

Though confused, she agreed. The elder gave her five hundred pieces of gold and departed joyfully.

Holding the heavy gold in her hands, the woman felt as though she were dreaming.“What is this ‘precious thing’? Whatever it is, it has fulfilled my wish to make offerings to the Three Jewels.”

Although she had suddenly gained wealth, she did not use it for herself. Instead, she used all of it to make offerings, cultivating vast merit with a pure and joyful heart.

Because of her sincerity, accumulated virtue, and complete generosity, not long afterward, while listening to the Buddha’s teaching, she realized the path and attained spiritual fruition.

This story reveals: true offering lies not in wealth, but in sincerity. Even the smallest act, when done with a pure heart, can lead to immeasurable merit—and ultimately, liberation.
